Florida Trail - 30 Miles (Stormwater
Treatment Area 5/6 to John Stretch Park)
(100 Miles Total)
Hello friends!
Hope everyone is doing well.
Here I am with another blog post from my Florida Trail expedition.
This time I will be talking about my experience of completing
the first 100 Miles of the Florida Trail.
After hiking the long and hard 40 miles from the previous weekend,
we were supposed to take a break the following weekend,
but due to a personal matter, we decided to hike two weekends in a row.
Before planning to hike the Florida trail,
Hector and I decided we would like to hike one weekend and rest the next one,
but I guess things change and we can't always get comfortable with our schedules.
Since this section of the trail was only 30 miles we said to ourselves
it was going to be an easy hike to do.
This time around, we didn't have any ride that could take us
back to Stormwater Treatment Area 5/6 to start our hike,
so we hopped in with a couple of close friends that were
going to Orlando for the weekend.
Unfortunately, we would need to be there at 2-3 am
if not we would have missed the opportunity to ride with them,
this time it wasn't our decision anymore.
We got to Stormwater Treatment Area in the early morning,
around 4:00 am, which gave us time to rest for a little bit,
I remember it was cold and the sky was beautifully filled with countless stars,
it was definitely a beautiful area to rest for a couple of hours.
At 6:30 am we started hiking towards our 19 miles campsite,
it was a gorgeous morning and we came across with some
fog during a good amount of hours on the trail.
This side of the trail had many houses, farms, horses, and cows,
which was a completely different side of Florida that I have never seen.
Around 1:00 pm we decided to eat lunch,
and by lunch, we mean sandwiches and hot dogs.
We knew we had some time to spare because we were close to getting to the 19-mile campsite,
so we took a long break and spent some time jamming to Rock songs
and talk about other things in life.
Once we got to the campsite,
we noticed it was a completely different thing from what we saw on the map,
it was like an old abandoned factory, a lot of trash on the site,
and on top of that smelled pretty bad.
Once again, we had to improvise and find another spot
close by to set our tent and sleep,
luckily, this area was close to an expressway,
we found firm ground behind one of the intersections,
and we thought this was the safest place to camp for the night.
The next day we went easy on the trail,
we knew we had hiked 19-miles the first day,
so we only had 8-9 miles left which we could have finished
in the first couple of hours of the day.
Woke up to good breakfast, coffee and a beautiful sunrise.
We started hiking around 9:30 am and along the trail,
we stopped several times to eat cane and take pictures on the railroads,
this was a fun and cool area to enjoy.
After taking long breaks at rest areas,
we finally reached the 30 miles hike and completed our first 100 miles total.
The 30-mile mark finished exactly at John Stretch Memorial Park,
which it looked like a pretty family friendly park,
nothing out of the ordinary.
Behind the park, you could spot the Lake Okeechobee,
which this was an incredible, big and gorgeous lake,
also, we were able to spot the trail from where we were resting,
so when we go again it should be a cool view to hike around Lake Okeechobee.
Well, folks, I leave like always with great content and pictures of this 100-mile trip,
I feel so proud of my buddy and me, still, all this feels unreal,
We would have never thought to complete the 100-miles total
in such a short time, it is all about dedication and hard work,
but also have a little bit of fun during the trail,
there amazing places to see around the Florida Trail.
See you next time!
Hope everyone is doing well.
