Camping Weekend at Burns Lake Campground/Turner River Point
Hey gang!
Back again with another blog for this month of January.
This past weekend the boys and I were meeting up for our yearly weekend camping.
If you guys have been following me for the past couple of years,
you know I started the Florida Trail back in 2019 and that exact weekend
was the time I met Miguel and Alexis for the first time and
we completed the first 30-miles of the Florida Trail.
So every year we had come up with this tradition to either go camping, hiking,
kayaking or do anything outdoor activity that requires to be all of us together.
To this day we had kept our promise and have done it for the past 3 years.
This year was no different except Hector was missing out
this trip for personal reasons and he couldn't attend.
Of course, it wasn't the same trip without him.
Instead of going hiking or backpacking through any preserve trail,
we opted out to do a more relaxing and comfortable trip.
Miguel had booked us a spot in advanced at Burns Lake Campground
and I had no clue where it was located or what kind of campground it was,
all I know is I was full-in and excited to see the guys and spend some quality time.
Great thing is we needed to take our kayaks since we were paddling the next day.
I was up and ready Saturday morning and passed by Miguel's
house and off we were to Burns Lake Campground!
We arrived in the middle of the day to a beautiful sunny day and perfect weather.
Our campsite was ready and reserved as you can see on one of the photos,
we started unpacking and settling to get comfortable and enjoy the last hours of the day.
One hour later Alexis arrived with his son as well and I was happy to see them one more time.
After a lot of talks and discussion it was time for cafecito time!
We tried making coffee different this time on a wooden rocket stove,
Migue & Alex had come up with the great idea of bringing this wooden blocks,
and they served with great purpose of trying to start a fire inside them.
It is a pretty cool and another method to start a fire and
nothing beats a good cup of coffee in the outdoors.
Anyways, we spent the afternoon making coffee and prepping up the food for the night.
On our menu we had rabbit that Miguel had bought on his favorite market,
and Alexis had brought some delicious rib-eye meat.
While taking photos of the entire campground Alexis's son spotted a small gator in the lake,
we went close enough to check it out and it fact was a small size gator just hanging out,
I took a couple of photos thinking it would be really cool to post it on the blog.
I haven't seen an alligator since my early days back in the Florida Trail.
For dinner Miguel had also brought white rice and lentils,
I'm not a huge fan of lentils but I thought it was time to give it a try and
it actually came out really good with the accompany of rib-eye, rabbit, and rice.
The next day we woke to a beautiful sunrise but it was one of those things
that you could tell it was "the calm before the storm" type of day.
Before going to Turner River there was a storm coming through the Fort Myers,
Lee County and the whole Ochopee zone which it is where we were located,
including some tornadoes warnings.
I know right? Tornadores in Florida.
Well, apparently we do have those quite often we just don't see it on our suburban areas.
Regardless of any storm or tornadoes coming we made a decision to actually go kayaking,
we were hesitating a lot at the beginning but we were finally
here and we wanted to experience no matter what!
Under the heavy rain and crazy wind we launched our kayaks in the water,
for a few moments we had to wait under the bridge
until the rain went away as it was really intense.
We had a some moments where we could enjoy the beautiful Turner River trail
and here is where I could photograph a little bit of mangroves and other sections of the lake.
It is really captivating and scary at the same time because of all the wildlife around you,
it almost feels as you are part of nature and it's really beautiful out here.
Part of the agreement was just to paddle for 1-2 miles each way,
since the weather was so bad and we were not in the best conditions to paddle more hours,
it was the best option for us at the time so we headed back to the parking lot to be completely safe.
Once we got back to the parking lot we came across some rangers that were patrolling the area
and saw our car and due to their patrolling hours got worried about us,
however, we turned out to be fine and we thanked them for their hospitality.
While we couldn't fully paddle and discover Turner River I know we would
come back to kayak this lake again with better weather conditions.
After this event we turned back to the campground and started picking up to head home!
Regardless of this bad day we still had an amazing time and I wouldn't change one thing about it.
Sometimes these unfortunate events happen and you have to learn to ride with it!
As always, I hope you guys enjoy all my content and photos,
feel free to comment and to let me know your favorite photos from this trip.
Now, I cannot wait until we pick another campground or hiking adventure for next year meetup!
Catch you next time guys!
