Fort Yargo State Park
(Thanksgiving Camping Trip)
Hello everyone!
I'm very happy to be back with a new blog post and hoping you guys are doing well.
This entire past week was all about Thanksgiving holiday and festivities,
always a quality time to spend it with the family, friends or close acquaintances,
the time of year where you can eat an insane amount of food and
dessert and nobody is going to judge you for it, so dig in!
I have always had the notion that Thanksgiving is an ideal holiday to gather around with all of your family and relatives that you haven't seen all year long or you haven't seen in a while really.
Since I have a big family we tend to celebrate twice on the same day,
we prepare a big lunch for the ones that can attend lunch time
and at night we celebrate another great dinner with other family relatives.
For the past couple of years I have been trying to convince my friends to do
what it's called a "Friendsgiving" which is a very common thing to plan among friends,
since I know it's a difficult thing to plan and everyone is always busy with their families on this day,
I kind of proposed to do a Friendsgiving with a very glamping style and out of state.
Believe it or not most of my close friends were excited about the idea and really wanted to do it,
the idea arose a month before we actually made this trip happened and after a few days
planning everyone was on board with a Thanksgiving camping trip out of Florida.
After days of research and looking for the right place to do our camping trip,
we came around Fort Yargo State Park which it is located in Georgia.
Some bestfriends of mine had visited this state park and stayed at those nice yurts,
I have always wondered about how those would feel since I have never stay at one before.
Next thing you know we were booking a yurt at Fort Yargo State Park! How exciting!
The most exciting thing about this camping trip is that I was taking my dog Max with me,
he would be accompanying me and the group to do this camping trip.
We took the road on Thursday night the day prior Thanksgiving
since it is usually easier to drive at night and there's less traffic,
this would mean we would have driven a good 10-11 hours overnight to get to Georgia.
The next morning we arrived to Fort Yargo State Park couple hours before the park opened,
so we went to eat breakfast at one of the public picnics the park offers and what a beauty,
I was astonished how enormous, gorgeous and amazing this state park is.
Check out some of the facilities and details to know about Fort Yargo State Park.
The park is open all year round, however, they do have a maximum reservation window,
I would recommend to check the official websites or Georgia state park site.
The park has a 1,816 acres of land and a 260-acre beautiful lake with
large areas for swimming beach, fishing, and boating ramps.
They have a total of 13 camper cabins, 6 yurts, 45 tents, trailer, RV campsites,
12 Walk-in campsites, 5 picnic shelters, 2 group shelters of 80-100 seats,
a beach pavilion, lake pavilion, pioneer campground, 2 boat ramps and gift shop.
As for the recreational side of the park you can do hiking and mountain biking,
lake swimming, fishing, boat rentals, canoeing, kayaking, and pedal boat rentals too.
They offer wedding services as well only approved by park administration,
I believe for this you must book in advanced and contact the administration directly.
Again, this is just a minor fraction of the amount of things to do at Fort Yargo State Park.
A few hours later we checked in on our yurt as it was ready and my god what a sight!
As you guys can spot of the photos above these yurts are a thing of beauty.
It really took me by surprise how beautiful the scenery is from here,
we were assigned a yurt with waterfront view to the lake which was a plus for us.
The yurt itself its fully equipped with furniture, electricity inside,
a fire ring, picnic table and grill on the outside,
just what we needed it!
The yurt area offers bathrooms and showers with hot water,
these were very close to our yurt about just a 2-min walk distance.
My very good friend Jorge had brought a pre-cooked turkey from Miami
and all we needed to cook it in the grill to have dinner at night.
We spent the next couple of hours prepping for our Thanksgiving dinner,
decorating the entire yurt with Thanksgiving accessories and decorations,
chopping wood to make fire for the night and cooking our delicious turkey.
Thanksgiving night was the best night of all,
everything seemed perfect and it felt like a real Thanksgiving,
for the first time ever we were doing a Friendsgiving!
The rest of the night was spent under the cold night sky,
close to the fire, listening to music and telling amazing stories.
Great moments you do not take for granted!
Great moments you do not take for granted!
For the next couple of days we took on different activities inside the park,
we hiked the 7-mile loop trail that goes around the park and gives different lookout of the park,
I was really exciting to do this activity as I was eager to see how Max would enjoy this hike,
I was happy to see him enjoying the outdoors and leading the way on the entire hike.
We also went kayaking and canoeing one of the mornings,
this was a great outdoors experience as we got to paddle down the entire lake
and got to see some hidden spots from the park that weren't visible to us.
Sunday morning was a our last day of this camping trip,
we woke up early morning to have breakfast and to enjoy the last
couple of hours here sitting by the fire and peaceful view of the lake.
I took some time to snap lots of pictures with my camera since I didn't
have the chance to take pictures prior our arrival to the yurt.
Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a perfect Thanksgiving,
this is all I wanted for this year to do something different and unique,
I know I'll remember this Thanksgiving camping trip for years to come.
I really hope you the rest of you had an awesome Thanksgiving with your family or friends,
I hope the next year you guys try something like this for Thanksgiving as an unique experience.
Enjoy this blog post and I'll see soon on the upcoming post!
Happy Thanksgiving!
