The Way Back To Angels Landing
(Utah Hiking Expedition 2021)
Hello my fellow readers.
Hope everyone is doing well and staying active.
Once again, I’m back with another blog post this time from my recent hiking expedition to Utah.
You guys know how much I love the great state of Utah and how many times I’ve visited Utah,
I have had passed through, layover through here and stayed at my last visit back in 2019
as you guys have probably seen on my blogs of that same year.
After coming back from our beach house getaway my friend Damian told me about the upcoming
trip to Utah which included some new acquaintances that wanted to explore and hike Utah.
Without hesitation I said yes and next thing you know I had about 2 weeks left for this trip.
I was really looking forward to this hiking expedition since I was taking
my girlfriend Lizi for her first hike and hiking trip with me.
She knows how much I love the outdoors and going hiking to these great destinations
that I just couldn’t wait for her to see what I’ve experience all this time.
We flew in on a Wednesday night through Las Vegas, Nevada and spent the night here
until the next day we had to drive to Utah for the next 2-3 hours to start our hike.
I must admit that prior this hiking trip I didn’t have many expectations on it,
since most of the new people which I have never met before were going
to be able to adjust or simply complete the hikes and trails of Utah,
you would think most people do but you never know your body until you feel the
high elevation, dizziness, fatigue, and other several health concerns when hiking,
I’m telling you guys from my personal experience.
Anyways, on our first hiking destination it was the great Angels Landing!
Oh man, I was so excited to be back at Angels that I couldn’t believe it.
This was going to be my third time visiting Zion National Park and hiking Angels Landing.
We started up a bit late since we got here to the park around 12:00pm,
around this time, I kind had a feeling that it would takes 2-3 hours top to get to the summit.
We started hiking up the trail in a pretty good shape and performance until
my girlfriend started feeling a little bit of fatigue and dizziness,
at first, it was just for a few moments but after a good section of the trail
I could see it on her eyes that she wasn’t feeling well so we decided to turn back down
while the rest of the group had a good 30-40 minutes of advantage going up.
The main reason why I decided to go down with her is because I’ve been in her shoes,
the last time I had all these symptoms: elevation sickness, fatigue, dizziness,
lost consciousness, sleep deprivation, tiredness, among other symptoms
I was hiking Mt. Elbert at 10,000 feet up high, and I was dying, literally dying!
When we got back down to the start of the trail,
I left her resting at the creek that’s by the entrance before you cross the bridge,
and then I decided to go back up myself for the second time on the same day.
Crazy I know! I have never done this, but I really wanted to go up!
After a couple of hours hiking my way to the trail I started getting
the same symptoms Lizi was feeling a few hours before.
It was a mix of everything dizziness, weariness but no fatigue or not vomiting at the time,
I really can’t remember if it was the heat or how humid it was in the trail,
I know for sure the sun was hitting me pretty hard and it was around
3:00pm where usually at this time it gets very hot out here.
Anyways, I reach the main section of Angels Landing after struggling
with all of the first and second switchbacks that are always a killer.
Here, I took a little rest up and found some of my friends that had decided
not to keep going on up the ridge where chains section would come up next.
Around 4:00pm or so I went up the chains section as a I frightening as this part
of Angels Landing always feels it is a thrill just to go through here every time.
I should say this is by far my favorite section to take photos and videos when on this hike.
A little bit up the ridge I found the rest of the group coming down from the summit,
seriously I was just missing like 10-minutes to go up the summit and make it,
however, I decided not to go up since we saw some clouds forming from far
away and they were coming through the valley of Zion heading our way.
To validate this whole scenario,
we had met a park ranger previously that was coming down from the summit
and advise us to either hurry up or to be careful hiking to the top of Angels
as there some clouds forming and most likely was going to rain,
therefore, I think it the smartest thing to do not to go up by myself.
For a moment there I felt a bit disappointed but honestly, it wasn’t that bad!
I have been up there several times and there was no need to feel any grudges.
In reality from where I was, I had about the same view of the valley and the entire park,
it just feels like making it to this section was still a tough challenge after
coming down and going back twice on the same day.
Anyways, I snapped a couple of shoots of the group and myself too
and headed to with the rest of the group to the scout lookout point.
Ready for the best part?
While making our way down to one of the switchbacks
guess who was coming up by herself? It was Lizi!
Funny enough I couldn’t believe but she actually passed
her section where she had stopped earlier during the day.
This was by far the most surprising and shocking moment of the day,
we were gasping and excited that she actually found the strength to go back up.
I wanted to accompany her to at least hike the scenic lookout so she could at least
get a taste of what Angels Landing looks from right above but unfortunately
we all ran out of water and that’s one thing I always tend to care for,
no food, water, or any supply means it’s time to go back down!
Nevertheless, this was a great accomplishment, and I was so happy for her.
Getting back to Zion National Park places we all got to share our stories
over a few cold beers and some great food at the Zion Brewery local restaurant.
It’s always a great time and experience hiking Angels Landing,
still can’t believe this was my third time in the past couple of years and it all feels just like the first hike.
No wonder it is one of the most popular hikes here in Zion National Park
and one of the places you will never get tired of visiting, that’s for sure!
Alright guys we have reached the end of this blog make sure to check out
