One Week In Costa Rica - Day 3: Hiking Day
/ Cueva Del Coyote / Poza Los Coyotes /
Poza La Presa / Catarata La Leona
(Costa Rica Summer Trip)
Hello guys!
Welcome back to Day 3 of my Costa Rica summer trip.
I hope everyone is enjoying this series of blog posts and have been following along.
If you guys thought Day 2 in Costa Rica was hectic and busy,
Day 3 was about to get more intense as specifically picked this day to do our hiking experience!
The night before the group decided to go out and party hardcore all night into town,
we visited several sports bars, restaurants and local places to drink for the night,
little did we know that we had we picked the worst night to party because the next
day we had to wake pretty early to go for a full day of hiking in Costa Rica.
Regardless of what happened the night before we woke up early, ready and excited to hit our hikes!
We had to drive a bit up north of Playa Hermosa,
approximately 1-hour and 30mins of distance from our Airbnb.
The great thing is that I had planned to have all our hikes close to each other
from a separate distance of 10-20 minutes drive in order to get things done that day.
We arrived to our first hike of the day Poza Los Coyotes.
At first, we couldn't find the entrance to Poza Los Coyotes because it has hidden
on a deep and narrow off-road so we kind of got lost based on where the GPS was sending us.
Not later than a few minutes we spotted the entrance on ranch and down by
the road there it was the parking zone for Cueva Del Coyote.
We started hiking the main trail to the caves,
from up there you can see a big rock where you can stand
and look down at the waterfall and caves.
It is quite spectacular to see such a view from this area,
we decided not to get down to the caves as it seemed really dangerous,
however, you are able to step over some rocks for a better view.
Essentially, we had another hike close to Cueva Del Coyote which was Poza Los Coyote,
but to our surprise the trail to Poza Los Coyotes was actually part of the same park,
it was just a different trail we had to take over some hill.
This was such a relief to us as we didn't have to go back the
off-road and look for this specific route or trail.
Just over the hill we spotted the beautiful and exquisite Poza Los Coyotes.
The turquoise colors in the water was something that struck us right away!
From up the hill you can get a better view at the river and gorgeous water,
we hike down to the river which was an easy path and once you jump
into the river you can feel the cold and refreshing water,
it was absolutely refreshing!
Some of the guys and I decided to jump from the hill as well,
I would say it was about 10-12 feet tall but an absolute
rush to jump from such high distance to the water.
After a few hours here enjoying the river we decided it was time to visit our next hike.
About 17-20min drive from Poza Los Coyotes we stopped at the kiosk of Catarata La Leona.
Before we did the tour we had a quick lunch break at a nearby local resturant,
since our booking was later on that afternoon it was the best time to eat lunch.
At first, I wasn't fond of the idea of purchasing a tour guide but it was necessary to enter La Leona.
Personally, for me this seemed like such a weird notion since my last time here at
Costa Rica I was able to hike most of the trials myself without any guides.
For some reason, they do offer and suggest you do get a guide as the trail is pretty deep and unkown,
you could tell the local guides really knew this place by heart.
Most of the hike was really wild and somewhat dangerous,
we had to cross and jump several rocks and sections that were not easy or moderate,
I don't think your regular hikers would be comfortable doing this type of hike.
The sections of the hike started to get really interesting to the point that
we had to swim through several small waterfalls which was refreshing for us.
We reached a point we had to swim from section to another,
and then hang on to some ropes that would take us to the inside of the cave
where Catarata La Leona was located and what a beauty!
Inside the cave now we could really see this beautiful and gorgeous waterfall!
It was really amazing to see this waterfall from first hand,
after a long and adventurous hike seeing La Leona in front of you,
it really gives you a feeling of accomplishment!
As you can see we snapped a couple of pictures here and off we were back to the trail.
Luckily for us our local guide took us to an alternative and easy way out of the
hike to make it back to the top and parking zone as quickly as possible.
It had started to rain around this time but we made it back to la finca on time until started pouring on us.
We couldn't have been more happier and excited to have completed such an incredible hiking day.
This was by far one of the most adventurous and unique hikes I've ever done in Costa Rica,
and believe me I have done quite a while over here and nothing beats the hike to La Leona.
I wish I could tell you guys how beautiful it was but not even the pictures can do any justice,
I guess one day you will have to experience on your perspective.
After a long hiking day it was time to head back to the Airbnb to spend our last night here.
That's it for Day 3 in Costa Rica!
It was such a fun and adventurous hiking day,
one that I got enjoy with all my friends to the fullest.
Hope you guys enjoy all the content from this Day 3
and be on the lookout for the next blog post coming soon!
