Chasing Waterfalls - Day 2: Catarata Rio Agrio
(Costa Rica Hiking Expedition)
(Costa Rica Hiking Expedition)
Hello friends!
Back again for another blog post on my Costa Rica Hiking Expedition,
excited to share another great story from my trip.
If you have read my last post you'd probably know that I messed up
my toe nail while swimming at Catarata Tesoro Escondido.
After spending the night suffering and with a lot of pain,
I decided the next day not to climb Volcan Poas,
which consisted of 8-miles round trip hike and about 6 hours in total,
I honestly was not feeling up to the challenge,
and was in a lot of pain to make this entire hike.
I stayed up resting that morning until Hector made it back
from Volcan Poas which I was pretty happy for him and for being able
to complete this hike for me and most importantly for him.
For our second day we decided to visit Catarata Rio Agrio.
It was not that far from the campground that we were staying,
it was easily about 20-minute drive since the road are very rocky over there.
As soon as we arrived, we noticed a couple of things open before entering the hike
to Rio Agrio, they have a market to buy fruits, and a restaurant with local food.
Hiking to this waterfall was kind of a comfortable and nice hike, we encountered many
small hanging bridges, and had a great sense of this part of the forest.
This was by far the easiest hike we have encountered in Costa Rica,
apart from having some pain on my toe I felt really good hiking
and taking it step by step on this trail.
As soon as we arrived it honestly felt like we have just discovered our own waterfall,
there no locals or hikers except us, it definitely has that feeling of being a private waterfall.
Here, we spent hours walking through the rocks, swimming in the current,
and enjoying the beauty of this amazing waterfall.
Fun fact: the river has an (acid pH) substance due to its volcanic origin,
with elements such as sulfur, iron, silicon, etc.
The main reason why it’s called Rio Agrio, it’s because as soon as you
feel the water you’ll get itchy feeling in your eyes and by trying the water it tastes sour.
Of course, this didn’t stop us from having a blast on Rio Agrio.
For a moment there, we felt like this was our own private paradise,
it truly feels better when other visitors or hikers do not come around
and you can just enjoy the hell out of these waterfalls.
After a couple of hours, it started to rain a little bit
so we headed back to the front entrance and decided to
eat at the local restaurant and try some local food for the first time.
Nevertheless to say, it was beyond amazing the food here!
We try some "casado" which reminded me a lot to typical Cuban food,
except they do a mix of beans, rice, chicken, beef or pork,
still a delicious and delightful local food.
This was pretty much an amazing second day in Costa Rica,
the fact that I was able to forget about my broken toe nail and all
that pain made me very happy and excited for what was coming next.
Still trying to wrap up some of the editing and next couple of posts here,
I hope you guys enjoy this blog post and be ready for more coming your way.
See you on the next one!
