Three States Hiking - Day 4:
Helton Creek Falls / Timpson Falls
(Alabama / Georgia / South Carolina)
Hello everyone.
Welcome back to another blog post of Three States Hiking trip.
The next day of leaving Honeycomb Campground I had listed several short hikes and falls
to visit on that same afternoon, however, due to some of these falls being located on private properties
I needed some permits to hike these areas which it was something I could not get last minute.
There was another falls I was not able to hike due to being hunting season and
most of the trails are close on hunting season so it was impossible for me to hike it.
Therefore, I stopped chasing other waterfalls and trails and moved on to my
next activity which was going camping at Jenny's Creek Campground.
The next morning I headed to Helton Creek Falls all way through the deep end north of Georgia.
Once again, I was back in Georgia driving the Chattahoochee National Forest
and exploring all the surroundings of this amazing countryside area.
Arriving to Helton Creek Falls through the mountain towns of Blairsville and Dahlonega,
taking me to this unique and small road all the way through to a designated parking area,
here's where you'll find the trailhead to Helton Creek Falls.
Heading down to the first couple of stairs you can noticed the sound of water from
the fall and even at some point you'll get a glimpse of the waterfall itself.
A couple of minutes later on the trail you'll see another short staircase
which gives you access to the Lower Falls of Helton Creek,
also, be careful when stepping on these staircase and part of the trail as it
can get really muddy and wet when water hits this section of the trail.
Coming back up from the short staircase you'll continue hiking
your way up to the Upper Falls of Helton Creek.
This was without any doubt my favorite part of the hike,
this side of the Upper Falls is breathtaking and beautiful,
the water runs down through the creek and trees making it a an exquisite scenery,
I sat down that at one of the fallen trees and sat back to enjoy my time here at Helton Creek.
Leaving back to the trail it can get very slipper so be careful as the trail can get very muddy.
Up next we had Timpson Falls,
this surely was a complicated one to find.
On this scenario I would tell you go do your own research or even check Google Maps
but not even with these tools you'll be able to spot Timpson Falls, bear with me.
Arriving to the main highway of the supposed trailhead to Timpson Falls,
we encountered a paved road and had some car troubles as we got stuck in a big whole,
the fun fact is that we had push the car several times to get back to the main highway.
Here we lost track of time and two hours have passed since this incident,
we decided to just park on the side of the highway and start hiking our way in.
Apparently Timpson Falls is located within several properties and there are
not exact directions on how to get there or to even start the trail.
After doing a quick research I decided to go with my gut and start hiking
passing a few farm houses and paved road that seemed to lead somewhere.
A narrow trail came up a few hours later and I kind of knew we were getting somewhere,
then we found some local girls that were wandering
around and they provided us with directions to the falls.
After 2-hours of hiking we spotted the damn waterfall!
It was extremely private and well-hidden I'll tell you this.
There was this little treehouse that served as an entrance to the lookout for the waterfall,
here it was time to unpack all those hours of hiking, enjoy a good
sandwich and start to take pictures of this amazing waterfall.
I'd say it was definitely worth the hike to get the amazing view of Timpson Falls,
although the trail didn't have better directions it made the hike a little bit more exciting
to be thrown out there into the unknown and for you to find out what's next,
I'll always find that exhilarating and adventurous.
Heading back is always easy and simple as long you keep yourself on the same trail bound
you'll always get back to where you started on the trail.
If you guys are into hiking several waterfalls back to back I would say
this was a great combination of falls and hikes to do in the same day,
not only they are close to each other but they are very popular in this area.
Let me know what you think in the comments and for other recommendations.
I'll leave you guys on this blog post and catch you on the next one!
Good bye!
